Working as a Registered Nurse

We’re looking for registered nurses to work in our aged care centres and home care team. As a registered nurse, you will undertake case management of clinical clients under the guidance of the Clinical Team Leader, which includes:

Client assessments
Monitoring and referral of clinical care needs
Providing clinical treatment as required
Evaluating care plans
Supporting case managers
Liaising with doctors and other allied health professionals
Meeting any legislative and organisational requirements.

What qualifications do I need to be a registered nurse?

You’ll need a university degree, such as a Bachelor of Nursing, as a minimum. For internationally qualified nurses, you’ll need an Australian bridging program in addition to your overseas nursing qualification.

To work at IRT as a registered nurse, you’ll also need:

Current registration as a registered nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Demonstrated previous experience as a registered nurse
A current driver’s licence
Flexibility to travel
Comprehensive knowledge of clinical issues relevant to the Aged Care Sector
Knowledge of the Community Care Sector for elderly Australians

Besides the required qualifications and knowledge, it’s important you have the right character traits as well. You need to have:

A caring, empathetic and understanding nature
A genuine desire to help others
The ability to remain calm and clear-headed during stressful situations
The ability to think critically when making decisions

What are the duties of a registered nurse?

The specific duties of a registered nurse will vary slightly depending on the setting, however, they are generally responsible for the following:

Providing clinical care for clients, including monitoring care needs, developing and implementing care plans to meet client preferences in consideration of cultural, religious or ethnic background
Completing client assessments on admission and as needs/care changes
Monitoring and referral of clinical care needs and liaising with GPs and other allied health professionals
Administering medications as per the individual’s care plan and in line with relevant policies
Providing treatment to clients where appropriate and accessing other professional assistance as required
Completing relevant documentation and reporting
Performing work in a legal/ethical framework, and supporting the rights and interests of the clients

Can an enrolled nurse become a registered nurse?

Yes. In fact, most registered nurses start their careers as enrolled nurses.

Enrolled nurses generally practice under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse who maintains overall responsibility for a patient’s plan of care. To become a registered nurse, you’ll need to complete a three-year Bachelor of Nursing at a university and become registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency AHPRA.
